What is Trauma?
Trauma is like the scab that forms after an injury. When the scab is bumped or poked at, it can easily start to bleed again and takes a long time to heal. Trauma can occur from abuse, neglect, bullying, abandonment, natural disasters, world events, forced hospitalizations, grief, and many others. When we experience these events, our fight-or-flight response learns to find creative ways to protect ourselves as an attempt to protect the scab to allow it to heal. This can cause responses to not fit the current context. In therapy, we learn what caused the scab, recognize what triggers he body to feel unsafe, and learn new ways to regulate the nervous system so the scab can heal to a scar. When the scar is present, the memory of the trauma remains but it is no longer as activating as it once.
